Banche, un “affare” italiano

BANCHE, UN “AFFARE” ITALIANO
Un reale sviluppo dell’attività bancaria si ha verso il Medioevo, e, ancora una volta, in Italia. In particolare, vista la florida espansione delle Repubbliche Marinare, pare che la prima istituzione bancaria sorse proprio in una di esse: si tratta del Banco di San Giorgio a Genova, fondato nel 1149. Questa nuova attività fu tanto redditizia da creare fortune immense: a Firenze, Pisa, Venezia, famiglie di banchieri divennero ricchissime e potenti, tanto da fare affari sin nella lontana Inghilterra, in Francia, in Spagna, e arrivare a prestare denaro ai regnanti d’Europa.

BANKS, AN ITALIAN ‘BUSINESS’
A first real development of banks occurred in the Middle Ages in Italy. Considering the thriving expansion of the Maritime Republics, the first bank is said to have been opened in one of the Republics and was namely the Banco San Giorgio in Genoa, founded in 1149. This new activity became so successful that it created immense fortunes: in Florence, Pisa and Venice the families of bankers became extremely rich and powerful, they did business in far off countries such as England, France and Spain, and began lending money to the European sovereigns.
