ANTONIO MEUCCI, VERO INVENTORE DEL TELEFONO
Tra più celebri emigrati italiani oltreoceano, non possiamo non citare il caso di Antonio Meucci, fiorentino che salpò nel 1850 alla volta di New York. Di quattro anni dopo è l’invenzione a cui il suo nome è legato, il telefono: per essere in contatto con la moglie malata a letto, creò infatti un primo collegamento telefonico tra la sua abitazione e il suo laboratorio. In gravi ristrettezze economiche, Meucci non riuscì però a trovare i soldi per depositarne il brevetto, e questo andò a favore di Alexander Graham Bell, che nel 1876 brevetterà il “suo” telefono.

Among the most popular Italian immigrants overseas, we cannot keep silent in the case of Antonio Meucci from Florence, who sailed to New York in 1850. Four years later the telephone was invented: to keep in contact with his wife, who was ill and bedridden, he created the first telephone connection between his home and his laboratory. Being in financial straits, Meucci could not find enough money to file the patent, and Alexander Graham Bell took advantage of this fact and patented ‘his’ telephone in 1876.
