Gli occhiali, un’eccellenza italiana

GLI OCCHIALI, UN’ECCELLENZA VENETA
Sull’origine degli occhiali vigono posizioni contrastanti, tuttavia, fra le diverse ipotesi, sembra prevalere quella che ne attribuisce la paternità ad un anonimo italiano, probabilmente veneto,
intorno alla metà del XIII secolo. I documenti più antichi che ne parlano esplicitamente sono infatti i Capitolari Veneziani del 1300, che citano particolari “vitreos ab oculis  d legendum”.

There are conflicting positions with regards to the origin of reading glasses; nevertheless, one of the most prevailing theories ascribes the invention of glasses to an anonymous Italian,
who was probably from Veneto and lived in the mid-13th Century. The most ancient documents which talk about glasses are the Venetian Capitolari of the 14th Century, which describe ‘vitreos ab oculis ad legendum.’
