Il volo, un sogno che in Italia diventa realtà

IL VOLO, UN SOGNO CHE IN ITALIA DIVENTA REALTÀ
Se per trovare i primi progetti di macchine per il volo si deve risalire alle intuizioni di Leonar­do da Vinci, la realizzazione del primo velivolo più pesante dell’aria si ha nel 1877, ancora una volta per opera di un italiano: l’ingegnere ed inventore milanese Enrico Forlanini. Ricordato in particolare come inventore dell’aliscafo, egli progettò infatti un “elicottero”, del peso di cir­ca tre chili e mezzo, e dotato di un leggero ma potente motore a vapore, che riuscì ad alzar­si da terra fino a circa 13 metri. Bisogna però aspettare il 1930 per vedere sollevarsi, sulla pi­sta dell’aeroporto romano di Ciampino, il primo elicottero perfettamente manovrabile della sto­ria. A realizzarlo, Corradino D’Ascanio, lo stesso a cui si deve la Vespa. Oggi è l’italiana Leonardo Helicopters, ex Agu­staWestland, il primo costruttore di elicotteri nel mondo.

FLIGHT, A DREAM THAT BECAME REALITY IN ITALY
While the first designs for a flying machine date back to Leonardo da Vinci, the creation of the first heavier-than-air aircraft didn’t take place until 1877, once again the work of an Italian: Enrico Forlanini, an engineer and inventor from Milan. Best known for his invention of the hy­drofoil, he also designed a ‘helicopter,’ weigh­ing approximately 3.5 kg and with a light but powerful steam engine, which was capable of rising to a height of thirteen meters. However, it wasn’t until 1930 that the first fully maneu­verable helicopter in history first lifted off the ground from one of the runways of Rome’s Cia­mpino Airport, designed by Corradino D’Asca­nio, creator of the Vespa. Today it is Leonardo Helicopters, ex August­aWestland, the first Italian helicopter manufac­turer in the world.
