FIORELLO LA GUARDIA, THE ‘GREATEST ITALIAN IN AMERICA’
One of the best loved mayors of New York was also of Italian origin: Fiorello La Guardia. He is indeed remembered for his three terms as mayor of New York City, from 1933 to 1945. But that’s not all. Fiorello LaGuardia went down in history as the first Italian-American director general of UNRRA (the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration). In 1943 the Fiorello La Guardia Airport, the second airport in New York, was named in his honor.
