LA SCALA MERCALLI
La sua fu sempre una vita modesta, fatta di studio e di lavoro, ma il suo nome è ancora oggi noto a tutti quando si parla di terremoti: stiamo parlando di Padre Giuseppe Mercalli (1850-1914). Milanese, Mercalli prese l’ordine sacerdotale nel 1872, ma, laureatosi in scienze naturali, preferì il titolo di abate per dedicarsi alla sua passione, la sismologia. Di lui ci rimangono oltre un centinaio di trattati, ma soprattutto la scala di intensità dei terremoti elaborata in base ai danni provocati dal sisma: la “Scala Mercalli”.

THE MERCALLI SCALE
His life was modest and made up of research and work, but his name is still very well known and linked to earthquakes. We are talking about Padre Giuseppe Mercalli (1850-1914).
He was born in Milan and ordained a priest in 1872, but after having taken his degree in natural sciences, he decided to become an abbot and dedicate himself to his passion, seismology. He left us about one hundred treatises, and above all his scale to measure the intensity of earthquakes, which was developed according to the effects caused by the seism: the ‘Mercalli Scale.’
