LORENZO GHIBERTI’S GATES OF PARADISE
The door to the east entrance of Florence’s Baptistery, created by goldsmith and sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti, is one of the most famous pieces of artwork from the Renaissance.
The story of the Old Testament is narrated through the doors’ bronze panels, an amalgamation of figures full of intense emotion and narrative complexity that was completely new to that time period. Furthermore, it is said thatwhen the wool merchants guild commissioned this work, they were not concerned with how much it would cost. For twenty-seven years Ghiberti worked on this project with ‘the utmost discipline and dedication,’ as he wrote in his diaries, and finally finished it three years before his death, confirming his talent and attracting the admiration of his peers. In fact, the doors were nicknamed ‘The Gates of Paradise’ by Michelangelo Buonarroti.
